Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training focused on grappling fundamentals, positional control, and long-term skill development.
Program Overview
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Red Hawk Academy is built on structured grappling development, focusing on positional control, technical precision, and long-term progression. Adult training is led by head coach Tim Welch, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, alongside an experienced coaching team delivering high-level instruction in a focused environment across the Phoenix West Valley. The academy also offers structured training opportunities for kids, women, and beginners in a supportive and welcoming setting.

Learning Control Through Position
BJJ training is centered on understanding leverage, balance, and control rather than strength. Each session builds the ability to stay composed, escape pressure, and improve positional dominance during live grappling.

How Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Is Taught Here
Core Position Mastery
Develop a deep understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals including guard, passing, control positions, and escapes. Training is highly structured and detail-focused, helping students build strong technical foundations, improve body awareness, and understand how to control or escape positions with efficiency rather than strength.
Live Grappling Practice
Apply techniques in controlled live rolling and situational rounds designed to bridge the gap between drilling and real resistance. These sessions help develop timing, composure, and decision-making under pressure, while allowing students to test techniques in a safe, supervised environment that builds real confidence over time.
Steady Skill Progression
Training is structured for long-term development, with a clear progression system that includes the traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt and stripe system. Students are recognized for consistent improvement through technical understanding, mat time, and skill development. Beginners are guided at a comfortable pace, while advanced students continue refining timing, pressure, and precision through more detailed coaching and live application.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu only for competition?
Not at all. A lot of people train just for fitness, stress relief, discipline, or self-defense. Competition is optional and only something people explore if they personally want to. You can train at your own pace and for your own goals.
What is rolling? Will I have to do it right away?
Rolling is controlled, live grappling where you practice techniques with a training partner. You will not be expected to do this immediately. It’s introduced gradually as you learn the basics, and always kept safe, structured, and supervised by coaches.
How do I choose the right class?
You don’t need to figure everything out before starting. Classes are designed for different experience levels, and coaches will help guide you toward what fits best. You can view the Schedule page to see what class times and training options fit your routine.
